ISO Publishes ISO 16759 (Quantifying and calculating the carbon footprint of print)

Well it has been a rocky road and we met with an awful lot of opposition, but we made it. To all 66 members of Working Group 11, the international band of hardy volunteers who authored ISO 16759 for ISO, thank you for your effort and commitment. Thanks to you the graphic arts industry and its customers have a single reference framework for carbon calculators.

Getting Uglier in Indonesia

Despite protestations to the contrary the steady destruction of Indonesian rain forests continues. A few weeks ago Asia Pacific Resources International Limited (APRIL), one of Asia’s larger pulp and paper companies requested the FSC to withdraw their Chain of Custody certificates (COC). A COC confirms that wood and wood-based products originate from sustainably managed forests.

Be Green to Be Seen

Every time we go to a trade show it seems the amount of greenwash sloshing about gets thicker and sloppier. And although it might not seem so, this is a good thing. It’s good because it reflects suppliers’ and manufacturers’ awareness that they need to be green to be seen. They may not understand what being green really means, but at least they know it matters to their customers.

The Economics of Green

Ideals are all well and good but at the end of the day businesses exist to make the money that keeps economies afloat. Carbon calculating and offsetting exist in order to enhance the business. As someone at Mondi’s Green Event said earlier this spring, “green is about being better” and that extends to all interpretations about what better means, including more profitable.
